Dry Land, Deep Pain

Bharat explained to me that initially the modern farming chemicals produced a higher yield of crops, so farmers got hooked. However, they found that after a few years the land needed more and more agricultural chemicals to maintain the same yield. The chemicals were expensive and so were the seeds designed to survive the chemical attack. The farmers’ bank accounts were drying up and so was their land, which had become dependent on more chemicals. Having no other resources, the farmers needed to mortgage their land to pay for the seeds and chemicals, in the hope that they would get a crop they could sell. This resulted in many farmers losing their land, losing their ability to provide for their families, and losing their dignity, which was unbearable for them. Sad beyond words, many of these farmers saw that the only way out of this deplorable situation was to commit suicide. Bharat found out that 12,000 to 19,000 farmers were committing suicide every year. Bharat and Bhavani felt compelled to do something about this and a vision for a perfect solution was born: producing organically grown Ayurvedic herbal medicines in partnership with farmers. In this way they would be able to make high-quality healing herbs available for consumers, while at the same time teaching farmers to return to organic traditional farming and free themselves from the deadly trap they were in.
